One village volunteer was killed and two others were injured during a gunfight between two armed groups in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Saturday morning, reports PTI. Manipur has been on the boil since May 3 last year.

The gunfight broke out after armed miscreants entered the vicinity of the hill village of Satang Kuki and launched a gun and bomb attack.

The fighting stopped after the attackers retreated following the arrival of additional backup forces at Satang village.

The injured has been rushed to a private hospital in Imphal. One of the injured person received splinter injuries on the face and another on his thigh, according to sources in hospital.

The incident comes days after five people belonging to the Meitei community were killed in two separate incidents of firing in Manipur on January 18, a day after two police personnel were killed in an attack by armed assailants.

On Thursday, firing took place in different areas at the border of Meitei-dominated and Kuki-dominated districts, resulting in the killing of at least five Meiteis in two different incidents, reported The Indian Express.

The body of a person “suspected to be killed in an exchange of fire between armed miscreants” on late Wednesday night was recovered in Kangchup, at the border of Imphal West and Kangpokpi district, police said. In a separate firing incident in Bishnupur district, four people were killed.
