A Border Security Force (BSF) personnel was removed from his poll duty in the Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency by the Election Commission (EC) on Monday, after a molestation complaint was filed against him.

According to an official, a molestation complaint was registered by a woman at Uluberia Police Station on Sunday evening.

“We have removed him from election duty. We are waiting for the police report. If found guilty, necessary action will be taken as per law,” the poll panel official told PTI.

Voting underway in West Bengal

Voting for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections commenced across seven parliamentary constituencies of West Bengal amid tight security on Monday.

The Election Commission has designated over 57 per cent of the polling stations as sensitive, deploying over 60,000 personnel of central forces in addition to around 30,000 policemen. It is the highest number of security forces deployed for any phase in the state so far.

A voter turnout of 15.35 per cent was recorded till 9 a.m. in the seven Lok Sabha constituencies involved in this phase, according to an Election Commission official.

The Uluberia parliamentary constituency registered the highest polling at 17.25 per cent, followed by Arambag (SC) at 16.38 per cent, Howrah at 15.20 per cent, Bangaon (SC) at 15.19 per cent, Barrackpore at 15.08 per cent, Sreerampur at 14.43 per cent, and Hooghly at 14.01 per cent.
