Pahalgam terror attack: Former Union Minister and Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar recently linked the deadly Pahalgam attack to the “unresolved questions of the Partition.” Addressing an event in New Delhi, Aiyar expressed his belief that India continues to bear the consequences of Partition, which has had long-lasting effects on the nation.
Aiyar’s reflection on the partition
During his address, Aiyar remarked that the Partition was a result of deep differences between the values of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, as well as other Muslim leaders who did not agree with Jinnah’s vision. He said, “The partition happened, and till today, we are living with the consequences of that partition.” Aiyar questioned if this unresolved issue still affects the country today, referencing the tragic attack near Pahalgam on April 22.
Pahalgam attack
The attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, mostly tourists, took place near the picturesque town of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. Survivors reported that the terrorists specifically targeted non-Muslims. The attack has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, with India swiftly announcing punitive measures.
India’s response to the attack
In response to the tragedy, India has taken several punitive actions against Pakistan. These include putting the Indus Waters Treaty on hold, reducing diplomatic staff, and shutting down the Attari border. India has also revoked the visas of Pakistani nationals and asked them to leave the country, while advising Indian nationals in Pakistan to return immediately.
After India announced tough measures against Pakistan following the terror attack, Aiyar said the government is taking the necessary steps.
Aiyar noted, “It is very early days yet for an outsider like me to comment on what the Government of India is doing with the backing of all political parties.” He added that the situation is still unfolding and stressed the importance of allowing authorities with access to critical information to handle the matter. Aiyar emphasised that the government appears to be thinking carefully and acting appropriately in response.
Security measures
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir authorities have taken swift action in the region, demolishing the homes of six terrorists and conducting over 60 raids to eliminate overground workers. As tensions escalate, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, expressed readiness for a neutral, transparent, and credible investigation into the attack, though diplomatic strains remain high.
