Hitting back at the allegations made by the Congress party, Union Environment Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Prakash Javadekar on Monday said that the former was raking up the Lalit Modi controversy because it has run out of all other issues.
“Who let him escape? He escaped in your regime? First answer that? What did you do after that? Congress has run out of issues that is why they are raking up this issue” said Javadekar.
“There are hundreds of photos of Jyotiraditya Scindia and Rajeev Shukla with Lalit Modi. What are you (Congress) doing?…Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and other Ministers have photos with almost all the accused in Coal scam, CWG scam and 2G scam,” he added.
Javadekar further said that there was no need to dwell on the matter as Sushma Swaraj had given a categorical clarification.
“Yesterday External Affairs Minister Sushma ji has given a categorical clarification…And after Amit Shah’s statement endorsing what Sushma has done, I don’t think there is any point of debate,” Javadekar said.
The Congress had earlier alleged that former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has a connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
The party also accused the NDA government of facilitating the clearance of travel documents for Lalit Modi, and accused Swaraj of overruling the communications sent by the former UPA regime to United Kingdom in this matter.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had also asked Prime Minister Modi to sack Swaraj from her post.
Swaraj had on Sunday said she had taken a humanitarian view of Lalit Modi’s case since his wife was suffering from cancer.
She further said that British MP Keith Vaz had spoken to her on the same, adding she believes that giving an Indian citizen ’emergencytravel documents’ cannot spoil relations between India andthe UK.
Vaz, who is facing an inquiry in the UK over the role he played in Modi receiving his travel papers, said that he had checked with the Indian Government before taking any action and added that he had received a ‘no objection’ from New Delhi.
