Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, who was allegedly assaulted by Arvind Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar at the Delhi CM’s residence, on Monday lashed out at Delhi ministers and AAP leaders for “spreading lies” about a “corruption FIR” against her.

In a post on X, Maliwal claimed that her status in the party changed from “Lady Singham” to “BJP agent” as she filed a complaint against now-arrested Kumar.

“According to them, I was ‘Lady Singham’ until I filed a complaint against Bibhav Kumar and today I have become a BJP agent?” she stated.

She further alleged that the “entire troll army” are rallying against her to malign her image since she “spoke the truth”.

In the post, Maliwal also refuted allegations by AAP leaders that she had filed the assault complaint against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar at the BJP’s behest as a corruption case was registered against her.

Referring to an FIR against her, she wrote, “Since yesterday, Delhi ministers are spreading lies that an FIR has been filed against me for corruption, hence I did all this on the instructions of BJP. This FIR was lodged 8 years ago in 2016 after which the CM and LG appointed me as the Chairperson of the Women’s Commission for two more times. The case is completely fake, on which the Hon’ble High Court put a stay for 1.5 years…”

She alleged that leaders of the AAP are endangering the lives of her relatives by tweeting details of their vehicle numbers.

“All the members of the party are receiving calls saying if there is any personal video of Swati, send it. It has to be leaked. They are putting my relatives’ lives in danger by tweeting their details after procuring them using their vehicle registration numbers. Well, lies don’t last long. But in the intoxication of power and the obsession to bring someone down, it should not happen that when the truth comes out, you are not even able to look your family in the eye,” she wrote in a post on X.

Maliwal said, “I will take you to court for every lie you spread!”

Her reaction came after AAP leader Atishi on Saturday claimed that Maliwal is facing charges in an illegal recruitment case and she was “blackmailed” by the BJP to become part of the “conspiracy” against the chief minister. Several other Delhi ministers also made similar claims.

Swati Maliwal assault case

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal recently alleged that she was assaulted by Arvind Kejriwal’s personal assistant, Bibhav Kumar.

Maliwal, in her complaint to the police, alleged that Kumar “slapped” her “at least seven to eight times” without any provocation and “brutally dragged” her while “kicking” her, forcing her to fall and hit her head on a table at the CM’s residence on May 13.

Bibhav Kumar was arrested by the Delhi Police on Saturday and was sent to five-day police custody. However, Kumar has filed a counter-complaint, accusing Maliwal of forcefully entering the CM’s premises and using abusive language. He is under police custody till May 23.

Corruption case against Swati Maliwal

In 2016, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) had filed a chargesheet against Swati Maliwal for allegedly making illegal appointments in the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). It claimed she favoured AAP workers.

The case was registered on the complaint of former MLA Barkha Singh Shukla, who made allegations of irregularities in the DCW during Maliwal’s tenure. ACB investigated the case and filed a chargesheet against the four accused -Maliwal and DCW members Promila Gupta, Sarika Chaudhary and Farheen Malick.

The agency claimed that against 26 sanctioned posts, the accused appointed 87 persons in the DCW during the impugned tenure, out of whom most were acquaintances or party workers or associated with Maliwal and the AAP.

The proceedings were being conducted at a trial court against Maliwal. However, in March 2023, the Delhi High Court stayed the trial court’s proceedings.

A single-judge bench of Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani observed that prima facie, the “essential ingredient of offence under Section 13(1)(d)(ii) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, namely obtaining of any valuable thing or pecuniary advantage is evidently missing” from the chargesheet and the order on charge framed by the Special Judge, Rouse Avenue Courts against Maliwal accordingly requires “closer consideration”.
