Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday began demolishing unauthorised structures at Habitat Comedy Club, where stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra recorded a show that included a controversial remark against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The action follows protests and vandalism at the venue after Kamra referred to Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) in his act.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed that Kamra, who faces an FIR at Khar police station, is currently in Pondicherry. The Mumbai police have arrested Shiv Sena functionary Rahul Kanal and 11 others for vandalising the comedy venue inside a Mumbai hotel.

What Has Happened So Far?

The controversy erupted after a video clip from Kamra’s performance went viral. On Sunday, enraged Shiv Sena workers stormed the venue and hotel, ransacking the premises in retaliation. In response, the Mumbai police registered an FIR against Kamra for his remarks. Maharashtra Home Minister Yogesh Kadam stated that authorities are actively tracing the comedian in connection with the case.

Commenting on the matter, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Everyone has a right to perform stand-up comedy. But freedom should not be unrestrained behaviour. Kamra should apologise for his behaviour. The insult of leaders cannot be tolerated. Action will be taken against him as per the law.”

What Did Kunal Kamra Say?

During his show, Kamra performed a parody song to the tune of Dil To Pagal Hai, referencing Shinde’s 2022 defection from the undivided Shiv Sena. His use of the term “gaddar” drew strong criticism from Shiv Sena leaders, with MP Naresh Mhaske warning, “You will be forced to flee India.”

Following the vandalism incident, Kamra has largely remained silent. However, he later posted a picture of himself holding a copy of the Indian Constitution with the caption: “The only way forward.”

With political tensions running high, the demolition of Habitat Comedy Club has added to concerns over freedom of expression and political retaliation in Maharashtra.
