Kolkata Gangrape Case: Almost a year after the chilling rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College shook Kolkata, another disturbing incident — the alleged gangrape of a law college student — has reignited public anger and political tensions in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police on Saturday said that the security guard of the Law College, Pinaki Banerjee (55) has also been arrested in the case.
Victim’s father blames Bengal Government for repeated failures
The father of the RG Kar rape and murder victim has come forward, voicing deep frustration over the continued pattern of crimes against women in the state.
Reacting to the recent gangrape case at a law college in South Kolkata’s Kasba, he said, “Such incidents are happening again and again. After what happened to my daughter, many people protested. Even after that, it continues. People inside the colleges are committing these crimes. The government has a significant role in this.”
Pointing to the political affiliation of the accused, he added, “All three arrested are from the TMC. This party must ensure such incidents do not happen again. The accused should be severely punished.”
TMC responds; BJP attacks
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shashi Panja expressed dismay over the incident but pushed back against political accusations. “Trinamool Congress’s student wing is not teaching students to rape,” she said in a press conference. Panja noted that police acted swiftly arresting all three accused within 12 hours of the complaint.
“BJP is trying to malign us because they can’t match the swift action of Kolkata Police. If they want to be a responsible Opposition in Bengal, they should behave accordingly,” Panja added.
Meanwhile, BJP West Bengal posted on X, calling TMC synonymous with “Terror, Molester, and Corruption,” sparking further political sparring.
What do we know about the alleged gangrape?
The alleged gangrape occurred on Wednesday evening between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM inside the law college premises. The victim filed a police complaint, which led to the arrest of three accused — Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) — all linked to the college either as ex-students or staff.
Two were arrested on Thursday near Talbagan Crossing, and the third later that night at his home. Police have seized their mobile phones and are seeking police custody for detailed interrogation.
A forensic team has examined the site, which remains under protection as the investigation progresses. The accused are to be produced before the ACJM of Alipore for custody remand.
Citizens protest
The incident has once again put a spotlight on women’s safety in Kolkata and triggered a fresh wave of public outrage, as citizens and activists demand accountability, action, and urgent reform.
