The father of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has revealed that his daughter maintained a personal diary, from which he possesses a torn page. As per a report by NDTV, the father revealed that he kept joking with his daughter about reading her diary but that they always respected her privacy. He said that there was no need to go through her diary as she was always very open with her family and told them everything. He mentioned having a photograph of a torn page from the diary but chose not to disclose further details, noting that the CBI has requested that the contents not be shared publicly. He further added that it is very distressing that the place where he sent his daughter to advance her career and serve others failed to ensure her safety.
The incident has led to widespread protests across the country, with junior doctors in West Bengal, Delhi, and other states marching in the streets to seek justice for their colleague. In Kolkata, tensions are high. The Supreme Court has stepped in and will hear the case on August 20. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been questioned by the CBI for three days in a row. The agency is examining his phone records from before and after the incident to understand what happened leading up to the victim’s death.
Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the victim’s family in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, has accused the West Bengal government of attempting to manipulate the witnesses. In a statement to ANI, Bhattacharya criticized the actions of the Chief Minister, alleging that she quickly intervenes in rape cases by contacting victims’ families, offering financial compensation, and trying to conclude the matter swiftly.
He accused the Chief Minister of having a “rate card” for handling rape cases, implying a systematic approach to settle such issues without addressing the deeper problems. This accusation adds to the controversy surrounding the case and highlights concerns about the government’s handling of sensitive issues.
He also criticized the Kolkata police, saying they have not performed well. The lawyer said that the police commissioner shouldn’t have held those press conferences and that he failed to manage the situation properly. The Supreme Court has meanwhile has taken suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder case. The SC will hear the case on August 20 now.
