The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted polygraph tests on two private security guards from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, following the alleged rape and murder of a trainee postgraduate doctor on August 9. The tests were administered after the guards were presented before a Kolkata court, which granted permission for the procedure.

With these latest tests, the total number of individuals subjected to polygraph examinations in connection with the case now stands at 10. This group includes arrested suspect Sanjay Roy, former medical college principal Sandip Ghosh, Kolkata Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Anup Dutta, four doctors who were on duty the night of the incident, and a Kolkata Police civic volunteer. The polygraph tests aim to extract further leads about the crime.

The results of the polygraph tests may not be directly admissible as evidence in court, but they could provide the CBI with corroborative evidence crucial for building a stronger case. Polygraph tests help in identifying inconsistencies in statements by monitoring physiological responses such as heart rate, breathing patterns, sweating, and blood pressure.

The trainee doctor was found dead with severe injuries in a seminar hall at the hospital, where she had reportedly gone to rest during her night shift. CCTV footage captured Sanjay Roy entering the seminar hall at 4:03 am on the day of the crime, leading to his arrest the following day.

The Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI on August 13, with the latter taking over the case on August 14. The incident has sparked widespread protests across the country.
