A day after a violent mob ransacked RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata police announced on Friday the arrest of 19 suspects allegedly involved in the attack on the hospital premises.

“19 arrests so far in RG Kar hospital vandalism. Five of them were identified by social media feedback. If you recognise any of the suspects from our earlier posts, kindly inform us. Thank you for your support and trust,” Kolkata Police posted on their official handle on X.

Yesterday, the police released images of suspects believed to be involved in vandalizing equipment at the hospital.

On social media, Kolkata Police posted: “Information wanted: Anyone who can help identify the individuals circled in red in the images below is requested to do so, either directly to us or through your local Police Station.” They also shared a video asking for help in identifying the miscreants seen attacking the barricades.

The police stated that the crime scene had been preserved and issued a warning against spreading rumors, stating that legal action would be taken against those who did.

On Thursday, authorities revealed that a mob of approximately 5,000 to 7,000 people, including numerous individuals, stormed RG Kar Hospital on the night of August 14. The attackers targeted protesting doctors and medical students, and attempted to ransack the facility.

In response, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide strike by doctors of modern medicine, set to begin at 6 am on Saturday, August 17, and end at 6 am on Sunday, August 18.

The unrest follows the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, which has sparked widespread strikes and protests within the medical community.
