Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) has long prided itself on being a global hub for students. However, recent events have put this reputation under scrutiny. In light of the unfortunate incident involving the death of a third-year Nepali student in her hostel room, the university finds itself at the centre of a controversy that extends beyond its campus, highlighting broader concerns about student welfare, institutional responsibility and international diplomatic relations.
Amid this, the university has issued an apology letter from the Vice-Chancellor through its official X handle.
“KIIT has always been a home to students from across the world, fostering a culture of inclusivity, respect and care. We deeply regret the recent incident and reaffirm our commitment to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all our students, including our dear Nepali students,” the letter from VC reads.

The incident has sparked widespread protests from over 500 Nepali students on campus, drawing national and international attention. The student’s father, Sunil Lamsal, has alleged that his daughter faced harassment and emotional blackmail, ultimately leading to her tragic demise. Authorities are currently investigating the matter, with a post-mortem report expected soon. He also confirmed that both the police and the university administration have been cooperative with the family.
In response to the escalating tensions, KIIT University has set up a 24/7 control room at Campus 6 to assist returning Nepali students. However, the situation took a diplomatic turn when reports emerged that university officials attempted to evict Nepali students from campus. Allegations of racially insensitive remarks during the protests have further fueled the unrest, with one university official allegedly comparing KIIT’s expenditure on students to Nepal’s national budget—an incident reportedly captured on video.
The attempted eviction of Nepali students has now turned into a cross-border issue, prompting Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to intervene. Expressing concern over the situation, he issued statements on Facebook and X, alleging forced eviction and urging the Indian government to take action.
