Sanjay Singh, the jailed lawmaker of Aam Aadmi Party, was not allowed to take oath as the MP of Rajya Sabha on Monday. According to the latest reports, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar took the decision of now allowing Singh to take oath today. Dhankhar said that the matter is currently with the Privileges Committee. Dhankhar’s decision comes even as Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court had allowed the AAP lawmaker to take oath as Rajya MP in custody.

The Rouse Avenue court had given the ruling on Saturday. At that time, the court had also extended Singh’s judicial custody till February 17. For the Saturday hearing, AAP leader was produced physically before the court. It should be noted that the jailed AAP leader was suspended from the Rajya Sabha on July 24, 2023 for not following the chair’s directions.

Why has been Sanjay Singh been jailed?

The ED contends that Singh played a role in establishing a special purpose vehicle to launder illicitly obtained funds stemming from the liquor policy changes orchestrated by him and his co-conspirators.

Furthermore, Sanjay Singh is accused of engaging in the acquisition, possession, concealment, dissipation, and utilization of proceeds of crime linked to the Delhi Liquor Scam during the policy period of 2021-22, as stated by the Enforcement Directorate. He was apprehended on October 4, 2023, by the ED in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case, followed by the filing of a prosecution complaint.
