Five terrorists were neutralised by security forces during an encounter in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. The operation, which took place in the Kadder area, also left two soldiers injured, who were subsequently evacuated for medical care. The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed the development in a post on X, stating, “Five terrorists neutralised by the security forces in the ongoing operation in Kader, Kulgam.”
Heavy Fire Exchange During the Operation
The encounter began earlier in the day after security forces received specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the area. Upon being challenged, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. The Indian Army and J&K Police jointly retaliated effectively, leading to the neutralisation of the terrorists.
A post by the Chinar Corps detailed the situation: “Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops and, on being challenged, terrorists opened indiscriminate and heavy volumes of fire. Own troops effectively retaliated. Operation is in progress.”
This operation follows the elimination of Junaid Ahmed Bhat, a terrorist involved in multiple attacks, including the killing of civilians in Ganderbal. The heightened security operations come amid ongoing efforts to counter terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has witnessed frequent incidents of violence.
High-Level Security Meeting Scheduled
In response to the security situation in the region, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to chair a high-level security meeting in New Delhi on December 19. The meeting will involve key officials, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and will focus on reviewing strategies to maintain peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
The encounter at Kadder began late Wednesday night after security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation based on intelligence inputs. The bodies of the five neutralised terrorists were found in nearby orchards but had not yet been retrieved at the time of reporting.
Security Forces Vigilant
The operation in Kulgam underscores the ongoing vigilance and preparedness of security forces in Jammu and Kashmir. While the neutralisation of five terrorists marks a significant success, the injuries sustained by two soldiers highlight the risks involved in maintaining peace in the region.
As operations continue, authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of civilians while addressing the persistent threat of terrorism.
