Following the season’s first snowfall, around 2,000 vehicles were stranded in Qazigund, Jammu and Kashmir, as icy roads caused traffic to grind to a halt. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed speaking with the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Anantnag to address the crisis. Heavy vehicles were allowed to move, while efforts to clear stranded vehicles continued.
“The DC is on-site with his team, prioritising vehicles carrying families and children,” said Abdullah. Emergency measures, including ambulances and arrangements for overnight shelter, were also deployed.
Gulmarg Evacuations: Army Steps In
Heavy snowfall left tourists stranded in Gulmarg, prompting the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army to assist. The Army evacuated 68 civilians, including 30 men, 30 women, and eight children. Additionally, 137 tourists were provided with hot meals, shelter, and medical aid.
“Immediate assistance was extended to tourists impacted by the snowfall and road closures,” read an official statement by the Chinar Corps.
Pregnant Woman Rescued Amid Snowstorm
In a separate incident, the Army rescued a pregnant woman from Kulgam district, navigating severe weather conditions to evacuate her to the Government Hospital in Yaripora.
The rescue highlighted the region’s challenges during extreme weather, as security teams provided lifesaving medical care en route.
Tourist Killed in Accident on Jammu-Srinagar Highway
Adverse weather conditions led to a fatal accident on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. A boulder struck a mini-bus in Ramban district, killing Ruby Agarwal, a tourist from Uttar Pradesh.
The landslide-prone Mehar area remains a concern for travellers during harsh weather, with officials urging caution.
Snowfall Disrupts Daily Life
Snowfall has impacted not only air travel but also roads, with icy conditions causing delays on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Special assistance teams have been deployed across Anantnag to aid commuters. Travellers have been advised to dial 112 for emergencies.
The India Meteorological Department predicts light rain and snowfall in the region until December 30, particularly in higher altitudes. Travellers are urged to stay updated on weather forecasts and prepare for potential delays.
While the picturesque city of Srinagar welcomed its first snowfall with a serene landscape, the disruptions underscored the region’s infrastructure challenges. The snowfall brought mixed emotions—a delight for tourists but frustration for commuters caught in the chaos.
