Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram raised concerns over the current state of the opposition INDIA alliance, indicating that the coalition may not be as united as some leaders suggest.
Speaking at an event, Chidambaram responded to comments made by Mrityunjay Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, who appeared optimistic about the alliance’s prospects. In a candid remark, Chidambaram said, “The future is not so bright as Mr Mrityunjay Singh Yadav says. He seems to feel that the INDIA alliance is still intact. I am not sure. Maybe Salman (Khurshid) can answer because he was part of the negotiating team of the INDIA alliance.”

While expressing hope for a revival of unity within the opposition front, Chidambaram acknowledged the fragility of the alliance: “If the INDIA alliance is totally intact, I would be very, very happy, but it seems frail. It can be put together. There is still time. There are still events which will unfold…”
Highlighting the scale of the challenge ahead, Chidambaram emphasised the organisational might of the ruling BJP. “If you want to take on the formidable BJP machinery, in my experience, in my reading of history, there has been no political party which is so formidably organised as the BJP. In every department, it is formidable. It’s not another political party,” he said.
Chidambaram’s remarks come at a time when fissures within the INDIA alliance have begun to surface, with multiple parties expressing divergent electoral strategies ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
