After the Election Commission (EC) transferred Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) Rashmi Shukla on Monday ahead of the Assembly elections, IPS officer Sanjay Kumar Verma was chosen to take over the post on Tuesday.

After Rashmi Shukla was transferred, 1989-batch IPS officer Vivek Phansalkar, the Mumbai Police Commissioner, temporarily took charge of the post.

The Election Commission has appointed 1990-batch IPS officer Verma as the next Maharashtra DGP.

Verma, who was leading the list of candidates for the top post of Director General of Police (DGP), is set to retire in April 2028.

S K Das, ECI Secretary, in his letter to the state chief secretary said, ” ..I am directed to convey that the Commission has considered the panel and approved the name of Shri Sanjay Kumar Verma, IPS (MH:1990) for posting as DGP Maharashtra.”

Verma had earlier served as the Inspector General of Kolhapur range and as the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) with the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) for four years during the Devendra Fadnavis government. After his promotion as DG, he was made the DG Legal and Technical.

Ahead of the November 20 Assembly polls, the EC on Monday directed the state government to transfer Rashmi Shukla, the first woman DGP of Maharashtra, with immediate effect, following complaints from political parties, including the opposition Congress.
