India Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for several districts in Tamil Nadu this week due to a weather system over the Bay of Bengal. A yellow alert has been issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and other areas across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema, effective November 12.

A low-pressure area is expected to develop over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours, which will likely bring isolated heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu from November 11-17, coastal Andhra Pradesh from November 12-14, and parts of Kerala from November 13-17. South Interior Karnataka may also see heavy rain on November 13-15.

Additionally, dense fog is predicted in parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh in the coming days, though minimum temperatures are expected to remain stable across northwest and central India for the next 4-5 days.

Delhi air quality ‘severe’ in several areas

Delhi saw a slight improvement in overall air quality on Tuesday morning, though several areas in the city remained in the ‘Severe’ pollution category with AQI levels above 400. As of 7 a.m., data from the Central Pollution Control Board recorded an AQI of 335 for the city. However, in some areas like Jahangirpuri, AQI levels soared to 418. Other locations with ‘Severe’ air quality included Anand Vihar and Rohini.

The weather office has also forecast moderate fog for the day, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to reach around 33°C and 17°C, respectively. “There has been slight fall in maximum and minimum temperature over Delhi/NCR during past 24hr. The Maximum and Minimum temperature over Delhi is in the range of 30-32°C and 14 -19°C respectively,” IMD said. 

Heavy rainfall alert issued for Chennai, school closed

Following overnight rainfall, Chennai District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade has declared a holiday for schools on Tuesday. A yellow alert has been issued for heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, covering 12 districts on November 12, 17 districts on November 13, 27 districts on November 14, and 25 districts on November 15.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Tuesday. The warning covers Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Villuppuram, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal areas.

In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are expected throughout the day, with moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms likely in many parts of the city. The maximum temperature is forecast to be around 32–33°C, while the minimum temperature may drop to around 25°C, according to the latest RMC Chennai bulletin.
