The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a warning on Saturday, May 4, that high tidal surges were expected to reach Mumbai’s shores in the next 36 hours. The BMC urged people to stay away from the coast till Sunday night.
In order to discourage people from entering the sea, lifeguards and marshals have been stationed in many sites next to the coastline, according to civic officials. “In several low-lying areas, residents have been asked to temporarily relocate for the next 36 hours. Alternate means of accommodation have been arranged temporarily in municipal schools and community halls,” a civic official said.
Mumbai’s coasts will be struck by tidal waves that reach a height of 0.5–1.5 metres, according to the BMC, between 11.30 am and 11.30 pm on Saturday and Sunday. BMC said that the National Institute for Oceanography (NIO) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have notified BMC on the same.
Civic officials further said that fifishermen have been contacted to make sure that their boats and vessels are berthed a safe distance away from the rocky coasts in order to avoid collisions and damage.
