The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued a ‘red alert’ warning indicating extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts of Maharashtra. These districts are expected to witness high level of rainfall on September 28 (Sunday)
“Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts with very intense spells in some areas. Coastal districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, along with the ghat regions of Nashik, are also expected to witness heavy showers,” an IMD official told the press.
The department updated its forecast earlier today, stating that compared to the coastal belt, northern and central parts of Maharashtra such as Marathwada and Vidarbha are likely to receive only low-intensity rainfall on Sunday.
Rise in water levels
A sudden rise in water level following heavy rains in Ahmedpur taluka of Maharashtra’s Latur district resulted in 4 labourers getting stranded on a barrage earlier today. The incident took place at the barrage built on the Manyad river at Chilkha village.
Multiple parts of the state such as the Marathwada region have been highly susceptible to heavy rains over the past two weeks. Such regions have seen consistent downpours since September 20 resulting in severe crop damage and distress to farmers.
Shinde on the situation in Maharashtra
Upon being asked about government’s plans to distribute relief funds to farmers who suffered severe crop damage in light of the recent rains, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reported the Maharashtra government is in the process of disbursing funds for flood affected farmers before Diwali
“We have visited fields and inspected the situation. Our government stands firmly with the farmers. We have met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and submitted a letter to him seeking help. Whenever a crisis arises, the Centre has always extended support,” Shinde told the press outside his office.
