The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an intense rainfall alert for India’s coastal belt, forecasting continuous heavy showers over Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and Goa for next six days. The warning includes the chances of extremely heavy rains in parts of Kerala from May 28 to May 30.

The Weather Department has also cautioned of severe rainfall activity in the Konkan region, ghat areas of Karnataka and Maharashtra. Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe and South Interior Karnataka are expected to experience thunderstorms, gusty winds along with lightning.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely to take place over Mahe, Kerala from May 28 to May 30. North Karnataka is predicted to have heavy rains for the same period. An alert level has been issued for districts along the Western Ghats.

Odisha is on orange alert

Meanwhile Odisha is also under heavy rain alert as well marked lower pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal has formed and is likely to intensify into depression within 24 hours. The Met Department has also issued an orange alert for Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada and Koraput. The state is predicted to receive lightning, thunderstorms along with gusty winds till May 30.

The IMD has also shared that above normal rainfall is most likely across India during the June to September period. The latest forecast has been made of rainfall at 106% of the Long Period Average  (LPA) , a slight surge from the 105% prediction announced in April.

In Mumbai, moderate to heavy rains lashed the city resulting in waterlogging in several areas. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the city would continue to be cloudy with the possibilities of thunderstorms and gusty winds. Khar witnessed a significant water logging on Swami Vivekanand Road where pedestrians were wading their way out through submerged water.

On the other hand, hot and humid conditions are expected to prevail across Rajasthan for upcoming days and heatwave is likely to continue in western part of the state.
