Republic Day is celebrated to mark the day India adopted its Constitution and officially became a republic on January 26, 1950. On this day, the Constitution replaced the Government of India Act, 1935. January 26 was chosen because it was on this date in 1930 that the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj, or complete independence.

Across the country, the day is marked with flag hoisting and cultural programmes. The main highlight is the Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, held in the presence of the President of India, with participation from the armed forces and tableaux from states.
