A day after clashes broke out between Congress workers and Guwahati police, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday called the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma the most corrupt CM in the country.
During the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam’s Barpeta, Gandhi said, “He is the most corrupt Chief Minister in the country. Whatever is told to you by the media is exactly what the Assam CM has conveyed to them.”
“The control of Assam’s Chief Minister is in the hands of Amit Shah. If he (Himanta Biswa Sarma) dares to say anything against Amit Shah, he will be thrown out of the party,” he added.

He further added, “The BJP tries to divide the nation based on religion, caste, and language, but we (Congress) strive to unite the nation. Bharat is a country of love, not hate. File as many cases as you can against me; BJP-RSS can’t intimidate me. BJP, RSS want to wipe out language, culture, history of Assam; they want to run Assam from Nagpur.”
His statement comes after an FIR was registered against him and other Congress leaders for the clash. They have been charged with criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly and breach of peace, among others.
The case was filed after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the “naxalite tactics” used by Congress workers are “not part of Assamese culture”.
Ever since the Yatra entered Assam, Congress leaders have been alleging that Sarma has been creating hurdles. A clash on Tuesday at Guwahati city limits took place when police stopped Congress workers from moving on city roads.
The administration had earlier denied permission for the yatra to move through the city’s arterial roads, citing congestion fears. Congress workers termed the grounds for denying permission frivolous and tried to break through the barricades, leading to the clash with cops.
