Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X on Wednesday and hailed Home Minister Amit Shah for his “outstanding” speech in the Parliament. Shah addressed Opposition concerns about the electoral process and responded to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s accusations regarding alleged vote irregularities.

In a post on X, Modi said Shah had used clear facts to explain the electoral system, highlighting the strength and fairness of India’s democracy while countering misinformation being spread by the Opposition.

“An outstanding speech by Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji. With concrete facts, he has highlighted diverse aspects of our electoral process, the strength of our democracy and also exposed the lies of the Opposition,” the PM said.

Amit Shah vs Rahul Gandhi clash over “vote chori”

The Parliament saw a fierce verbal battle between Shah and Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi over allegations of “vote theft.” Rahul Gandhi challenged Shah to debate the points he had raised in three press conferences about the issue. Shah responded that Parliament cannot operate according to Gandhi’s demands. The tense exchange happened when Gandhi interrupted Shah while he was speaking in the Lok Sabha during a discussion on electoral reforms.

Shah slams Opposition over SIR

Shah also slammed the Opposition over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, saying he has responses to all their claims, including those raised in Rahul Gandhi’s three press conferences. Shah explained that SIR is the process used to clean and update voter lists and accused the opposition of unfairly attacking the process. He added that losing elections does not mean the voter list is flawed and that double standards are not acceptable in a democracy.

Rahul Gandhi interrupted Shah during the discussion, challenging him to debate the points he had made in his press conferences, including questions about voter irregularities and the immunity given to Election Commissioners. Gandhi said there were multiple issues beyond the examples cited by Shah and insisted on a detailed debate.

Shah responded by saying that Gandhi could not dictate the order of his speech and needed to wait patiently. He assured that he would address all the Opposition’s points but added that Parliament cannot function if members constantly interrupt.

During the exchange, Opposition MPs staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha while Shah was speaking on electoral reforms. Following the speech, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 11 am on Thursday.
