Over 300 residents, primarily children and women, of Greater Noida’s Supertech Ecovillage 2 society have fallen ill with symptoms linked to suspected water contamination. As of Tuesday, 170 children are among the 339 affected residents.

The Greater Noida Authority, responsible for supplying water to the complex of about 3,500 people across 32 towers, has initiated an investigation.

The majority of those affected are from three specific towers — C1, C2, and C5. Residents believe that dirty water tanks may be the cause of the contamination.

According to The Indian Express reported, Sachindra Mishra, medical superintendent of Bisrakh in Greater Noida, said more than 150 of those affected are children. The common symptoms reported include diarrhea, vomiting, and stomachaches.

“We have sent the water sample report for testing. We have found mosquito larvae in water that collected in the basement,” he said, adding that while it appears to be a case of water contamination, they are awaiting the results of the water sample tests for the confirmation.

As of now, eight children have been admitted to Numed Hospital in Greater Noida, and two have been taken to Yatharth Hospital in Noida.

Ambulances began arriving at the society on Monday night, according to resident DK Sinha. He mentioned that many people were unwell and that the water supplied to the society comes from the Greater Noida Authority.

Chief Medical Officer Sunil Kumar Sharma from District Hospital, Gautam Buddha Nagar, said that a team of doctors had been dispatched to address the situation. “Last night, a team of doctors from Bisrakh visited and provided treatment to the children. Today, teams from the district hospital and Bisrakh have been moved. We are waiting for a detailed report,” he said, Indian Express reported.

N G Ravi Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Greater Noida Authority, noted that the water supply department had been instructed to investigate the site immediately. Although no issues were initially found with the water supply from the Authority, the team had collected water samples for lab testing. Further actions would depend on the results. Kumar also pointed that residents had informed the team about the recent cleaning of the society’s internal water tank, after which the water supply appeared dirty.

Jitendra Gautam, General Manager of the Water Supply Department, explained that the Greater Noida Authority supplies water only up to the reservoir of group housing societies. The distribution of water to residents’ homes within the society is managed by the builder or the Apartment Owners Association (AOA).
