Hinduja Group Chairman Gopichand P Hinduja dies in a London hospital. He was 85 at the time of passing. A member of the British House of Lords, Rami Ranger, issued a statement expressing heartfelt condolences.
As reported by the Hindustan Times, the statement read, “Dear friends, with a heavy heart, I share with you the tragic loss of our beloved friend, Mr GP Hinduja, who has departed for his heavenly abode. He was one of the most gracious, humble, and loyal friends. His passing marks the end of an era, as he was truly a well-wisher of the community and a guiding force,” Ranger’s statement read.
“I had the privilege of knowing him over many years; his qualities were unique—a tremendous sense of humour, commitment to the community and country, India—and he always supported good causes. He has left a huge vacuum behind that will be difficult to fill. May he rest in peace in heaven. Om Shanti.”
Who was Gopichand Hinduja?
Born on January 29, 1940, when he joined the Hinduja Group in 1959, the family business was still rooted in Indo–Middle Eastern trade.
Over the following decades, his vision and business acumen expanded its horizons across continents and industries. The group made some of its most defining moves, including major acquisitions of Gulf Oil in 1984 and Ashok Leyland in 1987, both of which led to a new era of NRI-led investment in India.
He was the second of four Hinduja brothers, who together built and managed the group founded by their father in 1919.
Following the passing of his elder brother Srichand Hinduja, Gopichand assumed the role of chairman in May 2023, guiding the family’s vast network of businesses in a global direction.
A British citizen, Hinduja was consistently listed as the UK’s wealthiest businessman, topping the Sunday Times Rich List.
The Hindujas were known for their influential presence in London’s real estate landscape, owning iconic properties such as the Old War Office building, now home to the luxurious Raffles London hotel, and Carlton House Terrace near Buckingham Palace. He is survived by his wife, Sunita; sons Sanjay and Dheeraj; and daughter, Rita.
