12:11 pm: Minister of State for External Affairs Vijay Kumar Singh congratulated CM Manohar Parrikar and Vishwajit Rane, ” Congratulations to @manoharparrikar & @visrane for their win in Panaji & Valpoi respectively.”

12:06 pm: “I am thankful to the people of Panaji who elected me. It’s a repeat of the 2012 assembly elections,” CM Manohar Parrikar said, attributing the result to his performance and connection with the people.

12:05 pm: Rane retained his Valpoi seat by defeating his nearest rival Roy Naik of the Congress by 10,066 votes who had resigned as MLA after leaving the Congress.

11:57 am: Minister of State for Civil Aviation BJP MP, Jayant Sinha tweeted about Manohar Parrikar’s landmark win saying, ” Congratulations to Goa CM Shri @manoharparrikar ji for his victory in the Panaji by-poll.

11:47 am: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu congratuling CM Parrikar tweeted, ”Congrats to my dear friend and @goacm @manoharparrikar for the victory.Wishing him all the best for developing #Goa to its true potential.”

11:31 am: Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) president Anand Shirodkar polled 220 votes, while 301 people pressed None of The Above (NOTA) button in the August 23 election.

11:30 am: Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje congratulated CM of Goa Manohar Parrikar on his victory.

11:27 am: As per the final results announced this morning, Parrikar polled 9,862 votes against 5,059 by Chodankar.

10:08 am: CM Manohar Parrikar, who polled 9,862 votes, beat his nearest rival Congress’ Girish Chodankar, who netted 5,059 votes. Anand Shirodkar of the Goa Suraksha Manch came a distant third polling 220 votes.

8:59 am: Valpoi bypolls Round 1 Results: Congress 1576, BJP 5395. BJP’s Vishwajit Rane leads is leading with 5395 votes against Congress’ Roy Naik who is at 1576 votes, according to Indian Express.

8:53 am: According to latest updates from Indian Express, Goa Chief Manohar Parrikar is leading by 2022 votes in the Round 1 in Panaji by-poll election.

8:47 am: Byelection result today will decide the fate of Manohar Parrikar who contested the assembly bypoll from Panaji.

8:18 am: “There is a strong undercurrent against Parrikar which he has sensed. He is already out of the competition. The real fight is between the Congress and the GSM,” PTI quoted Shirodkar saying.

8:12 am: Talking to reporters, Anand Shirodkar had claimed the real fight in Panaji was between the Congress and the GSM, while Parrikar was “nowhere in the race”.

8:06 am: The Sena leader Sanjay Raut had said his party had extended its support to the GSM’s Shirodkar in the Panaji bypoll.

7:59 am: Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that when a chief minister contested polls, the entire state machinery remained at his service, which could be misused during the election process.

7:53 am: Earlier, the Shiv Sena had said Manohar Parrikar should have resigned as Goa Chief Minister before contesting the August 23 Panaji bypoll to ensure a level- playing field for the other candidates in the fray.

7:45 am: The bypoll in Valpoi became necessary after Rane, the sitting MLA, joined the BJP after the Parrikar-led government won a crucial floor test in March.

7:32 am: Manohar Parrikar alleged that some Congress leaders, including Goa Mahila Congress chief Pratima Coutinho, were going around like “goons”, and violated the ECI’s prohibition of outside leaders camping in the constituency on polling day.

7:29 am: Panaji had recorded 77.06 per cent polling during the February 2017 Assembly elections, while Valpoi had registered 86.29 per cent voting then, Chief Electoral Officer Kunal had said.

Parrikar after winning the Panaji bypolls said he will resign from Rajya Sabha next week. Besides Panaji, the by-election was also held in Valpoi constituency on August 23. Valpoi will see competition between Health Minister Vishwajit Rane of the BJP is contesting against Roy Naik of the Congress. Parrikar took charge as Goa chief minister in March after resigning as defence minister. When Parrikar took charge, he was not an MLA and hence had to get elected to the assembly within six months as per law.
