As farmers from Noida and Greater Noida villages started to march towards the Parliament on Thursday morning, massive traffic jams were seen at Delhi-UP borders, including at the Chilla border, with security being amped up and Section 144 being imposed in Noida.
The Noida farmers are carrying out a march to demand increased land compensation and improved rehabilitation facilities for their families, as a response to the land acquired for city development over the last four decades. These farmers have been protesting since December 2023, demanding increased compensation and developed plots for their land acquired by local development authorities.
The Delhi-Noida borders have been sealed for 24 hours, with Section 144 being imposed to maintain order. Security forces, including paramilitary personnel, have been deployed to manage potential disruptions.
According to DIG and Addl. CP (L&O), Shivhari Meena, “Arrangements have been made so that the people do not face any trouble. We are in talks with the farmers, and all vehicles are being checked.”
To control traffic and potential unrest, pickets and barricades have been set up at the Delhi-Haryana and Delhi-Uttar Pradesh borders. The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory about heavy traffic on routes connected to Soniya Vihar, DND, Chilla, Gazipur, Sabhapur, Apsara, and Loni borders on Thursday. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly.
In anticipation of farmers’ protests in Noida and Greater Noida, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police imposed CrPC section 144 for Wednesday and Thursday, accompanied by a traffic advisory.
The advisory cautions against diversions on some routes in the twin cities due to the farmers’ movement on tractors. In response to the United Kisan Morcha’s call for a march to Delhi, the traffic police have issued diversions. The Golchakkar Chowk Sector-15 to Sector-06 Chowki Chowk route and the Sandeep Paper Mill Chowk to Harola Chowk route will be closed for traffic, as per the advisory.
To avoid traffic inconveniences, drivers can consider alternative routes:
