Two employees of a private bank lost their lives after being trapped in their sports utility vehicle that got stuck in the flooded Old Faridabad Railway underpass, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place late Friday night when the victims, identified as Punyashray Sharma (48) and Viraj (26), were returning home to Greater Faridabad from Gurugram, PTI reported.

Police said heavy rainfall on Friday caused an underpass to flood, and vehicles were warned not to enter. Around 11.50 pm., an XUV 700 ignored the warnings and drove into the underpass, where it got stuck in deep water. The vehicle began to fill with water.

Passers-by tried to help and eventually got the occupants out, but Viraj was pronounced dead at the scene. Sharma was taken to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, where he was also declared dead.

Inspector Samer Singh of the NIT Faridabad police station said, “Their families have been informed. We will hand over the bodies to the next of kin after post-mortem examinations.”
