The Election Commission of India (ECI) is scheduled to announce the dates for the Delhi Assembly elections on Tuesday. According to a statement issued on Tuesday morning, the ECI will hold a press conference at 2 PM to share the election schedule. The current term of the 70-member Delhi Assembly is set to conclude on February 23. In the previous election cycle of 2020, the schedule was declared on January 6, with polling taking place on February 8 and the results being announced on February 11.
The Election Commission of India’s announcement will trigger the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will aim for a third consecutive victory, having dominated the 2015 and 2020 elections with 67 and 62 seats, respectively.
Meanwhile, the BJP, which has been limited to single-digit seats in the last two elections, and the Congress, which was wiped out after governing Delhi for 15 years, will challenge the incumbent AAP. Despite contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Delhi as allies, the Congress and AAP will compete separately in the Assembly polls.
Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will face BJP candidate and former West Delhi MP Parvesh Sahib Singh, along with former Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit, son of the late Sheila Dikshit, in the New Delhi constituency. In Kalkaji, Chief Minister Atishi will go up against Congress leader Alka Lamba and BJP’s former South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri.
