Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condemned the violent attack on a Hindu temple in Canada, asserting that such acts will not weaken India’s resolve.
The incident took place a day after clashes erupted during a visit by Indian consular officials to the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton.
In a post on X, Modi described the attack as a “deliberate” and “cowardly” attempt to intimidate Indian diplomats. “We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law,” he said.
Footage shared on social media depicted demonstrators, including Khalistan supporters, clashing with others waving the Indian national flag on the temple grounds. Some videos showed individuals engaging in fistfights and wielding poles during the confrontation.
The banned group Sikhs for Justice, which advocates for Khalistan, claimed its supporters were protesting the presence of Indian consular officials who had arrived to provide administrative services, including pension assistance for seniors.
In a statement on Sunday, the High Commission of India in Ottawa expressed disappointment that such disruptions were permitted to interfere with routine consular work.
