Russian President Vladimir Putin’s two-day visit to India is scheduled to start on Thursday. Ahead of his arrival, New Delhi has enhanced the security measures, leading to traffic blockages for commuters. This visit marks the Russian President’s first trip to India since the start of the Ukraine war. Security has also been beefed up because December 6 is the anniversary of the Babri demolition, and December 13 marks the Parliament attack anniversary.
According to the Indian Express (IE), the Delhi Police have not yet issued a travel advisory, but one may be released ahead of Putin’s arrival. As per the IE, a high-security grid will be established around the routes taken by Putin’s convoy and the hotel where he will be staying.
Security Protocol
Over 50 members of the Russian security protocol teams will work in coordination with the Delhi Police and other agencies. Their primary role is to secure and inspect the routes in advance of his arrival. Senior Delhi Police officers will oversee the security arrangements throughout the capital, with patrolling duties assigned to Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams, Quick Response Teams (QRTs), and Anti-Terror squads at strategic locations.
Traffic Snarls on Thursday
After landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, the Russian President will head to the Sardar Patel Marg, the IE report stated. Commuters should expect congestion on the NH8 stretch, Dhaula Kuan, and Delhi Cantonment regions, along with Sardar Patel Road. During the evening hours, Panchsheel Marg and Shanti Path might also see diversions due to congestion.
Traffic Snarls on Friday
On Friday, Putin’s cavalcade is scheduled to begin moving early in the morning towards Raj Ghat, potentially leading to congestion in that area and on roads around India Gate, Delhi Gate, and ITO.
The Russian President is scheduled to visit Bharat Mandapam in the afternoon for a program with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which will likely lead to traffic congestion affecting areas such as Mathura Road, Mandi House, and Bhairo Road. Following this, the state dinner at Rashtrapati Bhavan will conclude the day, requiring commuters to expect traffic diversions on routes approaching India Gate and Central Secretariat.
