A 30-year-old man has been arrested in the Shakarpur area of east Delhi for allegedly installing hidden cameras in the bedroom and bathroom of his female tenant’s apartment, according to police reports on Tuesday.

The victim, who is preparing for civil service exams, had been living alone in the apartment for several months and would leave her keys with the landlord’s son, Karan, when she travelled out of town. The situation came to light when the woman noticed suspicious activity on her WhatsApp account.

After being advised to check her linked devices, she found her account logged into an unfamiliar laptop. She promptly logged out and, feeling increasingly suspicious, searched her apartment for hidden surveillance equipment.

In her bathroom, she discovered a camera concealed in the bulb holder. Following this, she contacted the police on Monday.

Officers conducted a thorough search and uncovered another camera hidden in the bulb holder of her bedroom. The woman informed the police that she had entrusted her house keys to Karan while visiting her hometown in Uttar Pradesh. During the interrogation, Karan confessed to installing the cameras three months ago, exploiting her trust.

He had bought three spy cameras from local electronics stores and placed one in her bedroom and another in her bathroom. As the cameras could not be accessed online and recorded onto memory cards, Karan had repeatedly asked the woman for her keys under the guise of needing to fix electrical fixtures and fans. His real intention was to retrieve the recorded footage.

Further investigation led to the recovery of another camera from Karan’s possession, along with two laptops used to store the videos.

The police have filed a case under Section 77 (voyeurism) of the BNS and have taken Karan into custody. Authorities reported that Karan, a graduate who has been preparing for competitive exams for the past seven years, has no previous criminal record and is differently abled.
