The Congress party on Wednesday unveiled its proposal for a new health insurance scheme, “Jeevan Raksha Yojana,” which promises free health coverage of up to Rs 25 lakh for Delhi residents if the party is voted to power.

Senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called the initiative a “game-changer” and expressed confidence that the Congress party’s chances of forming the government in Delhi were growing. “I believe this is also necessary for the country,” Gehlot said, stressing that the scheme’s potential to address the city’s healthcare needs.

Speaking of the campaign slogan “Hogi Har Zarurat Puri, Congress Hai Zaroori,” Gehlot said that it is Congress’ promise to meet the needs of every citizen.

The proposed health insurance scheme, Gehlot explained, aims to provide comprehensive coverage for families, including medical expenses for critical illnesses, hospitalisations, and treatments. Drawing from its success in Rajasthan, Gehlot assured that the scheme would be equally effective in Delhi.

“This is a universal scheme which will be for all the people of Delhi,” he added.

Gehlot further said, “I believe that you can win elections by polarisation, but cannot run the country or develop it. Bringing back Congress in Delhi is very important. Sheila Dikshit gave excellent governance and the modern Delhi. We would like to bring that era back in the national capital.”

Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav echoed Gehlot’s sentiments, saying the success of the health scheme in Rajasthan, known as the “Chiranjeevi Yojana,” had shown its effectiveness and that Delhi needed such a program for the betterment of its residents.

In addition to the health insurance scheme, Congress had earlier announced the “Pyaari Didi Yojana,” which promises a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to women if the party wins the upcoming Delhi elections.

Polling for the 70-member Delhi assembly will take place on February 5, and counting of votes will be on February 8.
