Delhi BMW crash: After Finance Ministry official Navjot Singh was killed in a BMW crash in Delhi, police have arrested Gaganpreet Makkad, who was behind the wheel, for destroying evidence. An FIR has been filed at the Delhi Cantonment police station, and an investigation is ongoing.

Delhi Police said that Gaganpreet has been booked under sections related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and attempting to destroy evidence following the accident.

The FIR has invoked sections 281 (negligent and rash driving), 125B (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender).

‘Hospital owner is known to them’

The BMW, which Gaganpreet was driving, is registered under her husband Parikshit Makkad’s name. The couple resides in Rajouri Garden, West Delhi, and at the time of the crash, they were travelling with their two children.

Police said the couple transported Navjot Singh and his injured wife to a hospital nearly 17 km from the accident site. They reportedly bypassed closer hospitals like AIIMS and Safdarjung, choosing instead to take the injured to Nulife Hospitals in GTB Nagar. According to reports, Gaganpreet’s paternal home is in the same locality as the hospital.

“After the accident, the duo, Gaganpreet and Parikshit, took Navjot and his injured wife to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, nearly 17 km from the accident site. It has been revealed that the hospital owner is known to them, as Gaganpreet’s parental home is in the same locality where the hospital is located,” a police officer said.

The family has raised concerns about the very same issue, claiming that he could have been saved had the couple taken him to a nearby hospital promptly.

Her husband run a business manufacturing horse leather saddles, seats, covers, and belts in Delhi.

What has happened?

The couple had visited Gurdwara Bangla Sahib and stopped at Karnataka Bhavan for a meal earlier in the day. They left around 1:15 pm, heading towards their home in Hari Nagar via Dhaula Kuan, when their bike was struck by a BMW. The BMW, carrying its driver, Gaganpreet, her husband, and their two children, transported the injured couple by taxi to Neulife Hospitals in GTB Nagar, where 57-year-old Singh was declared dead.

Singh’s wife, who sustained a severe head injury despite wearing a helmet, was later shifted to Venkateshwar Hospital for specialised treatment. Reports indicate that her requests to be taken to a nearby hospital were ignored by Gaganpreet and her husband.

The police only became aware of the accident after receiving PCR calls regarding a traffic jam between Delhi Cantonment and Dhaula Kuan. Upon arrival, they found the BMW overturned on its side and the motorcycle near the divider.

Eyewitnesses stated that the collision was so forceful that the motorcycle first hit the divider before colliding with a bus on the left side of the road.
