Designers Shivan Bhatiya and Narresh Kukreja, also known as Shivan & Narresh, have issued an apology following backlash over their recent fashion show in Gulmarg, Kashmir, which was criticized for featuring “obscene” garments during the holy month of Ramzan.
The Delhi-based duo showcased their skiwear collection on March 7 as part of 15th anniversary celebrations of their label. The event, however, soon raised a storm, particularly after Kashmir’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, took to social media to denounce the show as “outrageous” and offensive to the region’s religious sentiments.
Farooq voiced his anger and shock, declaring that the fashion show, organized during the holy month of Ramzan, was contrary to the Sufi and saint culture in Kashmir. The show’s controversial nature created outrage within the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, and the issue was picked up by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Upon criticism, Shivan and Narresh posted a message on their official X (formerly Twitter) page. They apologized for any inconvenience caused by their presentation, citing that their sole intention was to honor creativity and the ski way of life and not to displease any religious beliefs. They reiterated their regard for all traditions and cultures and assured the public that they never intended to bring discomfort.
“We deeply regret any hurt caused by our recent presentation in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramadan. Our sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski & après-ski lifestyle, without any desire to offend anyone or any religious sentiments. Respect for all cultures and traditions is at our heart, and we acknowledge the concerns raised. We sincerely apologize for any unintended discomfort and appreciate the feedback from our community. We remain committed to being more mindful and respectful,” the designers wrote.

The outrage persisted with harsh condemnation from religious and social leaders. Abdullah, in his response to Farooq’s message, said the public outrage and shock were justifiable, observing that the photos reflected blatant insensitivity to local feelings. He also went on to say that his office had opened an investigation into the issue and would act accordingly after getting the report.
Social activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat also expressed his dismay, terming the event an attempt to debase Kashmir’s moral, religious, and ethical standards. He wondered how such an event could have been permitted during Ramzan, a period of worship and respect for many.
Other social media users also condemned the event, labeling the show a mockery of their culture, traditions, and faith. One user denounced the event, saying that it was an inappropriate show of decadence during a period that should have been devoted to prayer and reflection.
Abdullah, during the Assembly session, made it clear that the government was not involved in the show’s organization. He further stated that even if permission had been requested, it would not have been provided. He clearly stated that this kind of show should never have been organized at any point of the year and assured the nation that strict action would be initiated if any rules were broken.
Elle India removes reel after public backlash
Elle India has taken down a controversial Instagram reel showcasing a fashion event in Gulmarg, Kashmir, after widespread public outrage. The 0.35-second video, which was shared on Friday, featured scantily clad male and female models walking on a snow-covered outdoor ramp. In another clip, alcohol was seen being poured into designer glassware against the stunning backdrop of Gulmarg’s snow-capped mountains.
Prior to removing the post, Elle India had described the event as an “audacious” move that could push “fashion to newer heights.” The magazine framed it as an effort to bring a blend of high fashion and the unique winter charm of Gulmarg. However, the reaction to the reel was far from positive. The controversial display led to public uproar, with many accusing the publication of promoting disrespectful imagery in a place known for its spiritual and cultural significance.
After Shivan and Narresh apologized, users on social media appreciated the sincerity of the designers’ regret and hoped the episode would serve to increase awareness about local sensitivities.
