TVK Vijay rally stampede Live Updates: TVK rally organiser, party’s Karur West district president, VP Mathiyazhakan, has been booked for attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder and several other sections of the IPC, Mathrubhumi reported. At least 39 people lost their lives after a massive rally by TVK chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur turned chaotic due to heavy overcrowding. According to a report by HT, officials had expected around 30,000 people for the TVK rally, but 60,000 people turned up.

Stalin, while speaking to the reporters, said that this is by far the largest number of deaths the state has witnessed in a program organised by a political party. He said that he is falling short of words to describe the incident and that such a tragedy “should never happen” in the future.

“I am standing here with deep sorrow. I am unable to describe the horrific accident that took place in Karur. Yesterday, around 7:45 pm, while I was in Chennai speaking with officials, I received the news that such an incident had occurred. As soon as I received the information, I called former Minister Senthil Balaji, asked him to inquire, and instructed him to go to the hospital. When I heard the news about the death toll, I instructed the nearby ministers to go to Karur,” he said.

CM Stalin went on to say, “So far, 39 people have died. In the history of our state, never has such a large number of people lost their lives in a program organised by a political party, and such a tragedy should never happen in the future either. Currently, 51 people are undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit. With a heavy heart, I pay homage to those who have lost their lives.”

The Chief Minister also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh to those who were injured. He has also ordered an inquiry into the tragedy, and it will be headed by a retired High Court judge.

PM Narendra Modi also posted a message on X and called the incident “deeply saddening”. “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,” the PM wrote on X.

Vijay TVK rally stampede LIVE: 'My heart and mind are overwhelmed with profound heaviness', Vijay on stampede

TVK Chief Vijay releases statement on stampede incident that killed several people during his rally.

"Greetings to all who reside in my heart. In a way that defies imagination, thinking about what happened in Karur yesterday, my heart and mind are overwhelmed with profound heaviness. In the midst of the immense grief of losing our loved ones, I am at a loss for words to express the pain my heart endures. My eyes and mind are clouded with sorrow. The faces of all of you whom I have met keep flashing through my mind. The more I think of my loved ones who show affection and care, the further my heart slips further from its place. My dear ones… While I express my deepest condolences with indescribable pain to you who are grieving the loss of our cherished loved ones, I also stand close to your hearts, sharing this immense sorrow. This is indeed an irreparable loss for us. No matter who offers words of comfort, the loss of our loved ones is unbearable. Yet, as a member of your family, I intend to provide 20 lakh rupees to each family that has lost a loved one and 2 lakh rupees to those who are injured and receiving treatment. This amount is, of course, not significant in the face of such a loss. Still, at this moment, it is my duty as one who belongs to your family to stand by you, my dear ones, with a heavy heart. Likewise, I pray to God that all our loved ones who are injured and undergoing treatment recover swiftly and return home. I also assure you that our Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam will steadfastly provide all necessary support to our loved ones under treatment. By the grace of God, let us strive to recover from all this."
