Cyclone Montha Live Tracker: Cyclone Montha, which was earlier intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, has now weakened into a cyclonic storm over coastal Andhra Pradesh, according to the latest India Meteorological Department (IMD) update. In the past six hours, it moved northwest at a speed of about 10 kmph and was centered at 2:30 am today (October 29, 2025) near latitude 16.5°N and longitude 81.5°E. The storm was located about 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur, 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam, 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada, 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam, and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha.
It is expected to continue moving northwest across coastal Andhra Pradesh and maintain its strength for around six hours before weakening into a deep depression later. According to the latest observations, the rear part of the storm has already moved inland. The system is being closely tracked by Doppler Weather Radars in Machilipatnam and Visakhapatnam, along with data from coastal observatories, automatic weather stations, ships, buoys, and satellites.
‘No major impact in Odisha,’ says CM Majhi
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday said that the state was largely spared from major damage after Cyclone Montha made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast around 7 pm. While the storm brought strong winds, Odisha escaped serious impact, though precautionary measures continued across the state. After reviewing the situation at the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) control room, Majhi said only minor incidents of landslides and uprooted trees were reported in a few places. He noted that the damage was much less than expected and expressed gratitude that the state had avoided a major disaster.
Majhi also said that the rainfall was lower than forecast. Gajapati and Ganjam districts recorded around 115 mm of rain each, compared to the earlier prediction of over 200 mm. Even Malkangiri district, which lies close to where the cyclone hit in Andhra Pradesh, did not see heavy rainfall. He further informed that 17,817 people had been safely evacuated to more than 2,000 cyclone shelters, against the initial plan to move around 32,000 people. The biggest relief, he said, was that there were no reports of casualties.

The IMD said that the cyclone began making landfall around 7 pm on Tuesday. It added that the cyclone crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanan coasts between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, to the south of Kakinada.
In an update posted on X, the IMD said, “Latest observations indicate that the Landfall process has commenced. The landfall process will continue for the next 3-4 hours.” The department added, “It will continue to move north-northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the next 3-4 hours as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.”

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu visited cyclone-hit areas in Konaseema district and said the damage caused by Cyclone Montha was “minimal," according to ANI.
Naidu said officials have been on the ground for the past five days, monitoring the situation and working on relief operations. “The survey is done. We are able to manage because of preparedness. Around one lakh camps have been formed to assist affected people,” he said.

Cyclone Montha LIVE: 2 dead due to cyclone
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday confirmed that two people lost their lives due to the impact of Cyclone Montha. He said timely precautionary steps had helped reduce the overall damage and urged officials to continue relief work for another two days to assist affected families.
“If we work in the same way for another two days, we can give much relief to people. Due to the cyclone, two persons died,” Naidu said in an official statement.

IMD confirmed that Cyclone Montha, which crossed Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around midnight, has now weakened into a cyclonic storm. The system was located near Narsapur, around 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam and 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada.

Several trees were uprooted and roads flooded as the storm weakened into a cyclonic storm while moving northwest at 10 kmph, IMD said.
Cyclone Month, which was weakened after landfall, continues to trigger widespread downpours across eastern India, as per the IMD. In West Bengal, several districts are likely to receive intense rains till Friday as the system heads towards north-northwest, slowly weakening into a depression. The Met Department has predicted heavy rains in Padchim Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Purba and Jhagram on Wednesday. On the other hand, rain is expected to rain throughout the week in Purulia, Murshidabad, Birbhum, and Purba Bardhaman.
As per a report by PTI, rain lashed Ranchi, Lohardaga, Hazaribagh, Khunti, Gumla, Simdega, Palamu, Khunti and Ramgarh on Wednesday. The IMD has forecast a heavy wet spell for Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Simdega, Lohardaga, Latehar, in parts of Santhal Pargana and Ramgarh for Thursday.
The Cyclone Montha made landfall near Narasapuram, between Machilipatnam and Kakinada, around midnight between 11:30 pm and 12:30 am, as stated by Dr Karuna Sagar, a scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Amravati.
He further added that the system weakened into a cyclonic storm by around 2:30 am today and is expected to continue to move towards north-northwest toward Telangana.
As per the IMD latest update, Cyclone Montha has weakened into a deep depression after heading towards north-northwest along coastal Andhra Pradesh with a speed of around 15 kmph over the past six hours.
On October 29, at 8:30 am, the weather system was centred over coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Telangana. The Met Department forecast that it is expected to continue moving towards north-northwest across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and the southern parts of Chhattisgarh.
In Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh, strong winds from Cyclone Montha uprooted many trees and damaged electric poles. In part of some regions, power supply is also disrupted. Officials have started the repair work to clear debris and restore back to normal, as reported by ANI.
Police, NDRF teams restore traffic after a tree collapse in Anakapalli town, Andhra Pradesh got stalled on early Wednesday when a large tree fell near Nookalamma Thali Arch and an Indian Oil petrol bunk, leading to heavy traffic.
