The Congress has appointed M.K. Bhardwaj and Bhanu Mahajan as acting working presidents of its Jammu and Kashmir unit amid ongoing assembly polls in the region.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge made the appointments effective immediately, according to a party statement issued on Saturday.

In August, the party appointed Tariq Hameed Karra as the president of its Jammu and Kashmir unit, replacing Vikar Rasool Wani. Kharge also designated Tara Chand and Raman Bhalla as working presidents for the region.

The elections in Jammu and Kashmir are being conducted in three phases. Voting for 24 seats took place in the first phase on September 18. The second phase, covering 26 seats, is scheduled for September 25, while voting for the third phase will occur on October 1, with results expected on October 8.
