Several people are feared trapped as disaster response teams rush to the scene. A chilling video captured the floodwaters sweeping down the hill, carrying mud, debris, and everything in their path.

Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya said a major cloud burst has occurred in Dharali near Harsil.

About 10-12 people could be buried under the debris, Rajesh Panwar, a villager, told PTI. He added that 20-25 hotels and homestays may have been washed away.

There was panic in villages in the area, with people scrambling for dry ground. Videos from the region showed a torrent of water rushing down as terrified residents could be heard screaming in fear.

What Is a Cloudburst?

A cloudburst is an intense, localized rainstorm in which more than 10 cm of rainfall occurs within a short period over a small area. This weather phenomenon is especially common in mountainous regions like Uttarakhand. It happens when strong upward air currents keep raindrops suspended in clouds until they suddenly fall all at once, often accompanied by hail and thunder.

The Himalayan terrain worsens the impact of such events due to its steep slopes and unstable soil, resulting in flash floods and landslides. In Dharali, the recent cloudburst triggered landslides and caused heavy water flow, washing away soil and debris into the village and leading to severe flooding.
