China has called for an impartial investigation into the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir while emphasising its support for Pakistan’s security concerns. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed his country’s backing for Pakistan’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and security interests during a phone call with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday.

In a readout released by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang stated that China, as a “hardcore friend and all-weather strategic partner” of Pakistan, fully understands and supports Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns. He also reiterated China’s support for Pakistan’s right to safeguard its sovereignty and security interests.

The Chinese minister condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which targeted tourists, resulting in casualties. However, China had previously worked with Pakistan to soften a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) condemnation of the attack, which had sparked tensions between India and Pakistan.

Wang Yi further stressed the importance of both India and Pakistan exercising restraint to avoid escalating the conflict. “China supports an impartial investigation as soon as possible, as the conflict is not in the fundamental interests of India and Pakistan, nor is it conducive to regional peace and stability,” said Wang. He urged both countries to “move towards each other” and work towards de-escalating the situation.

In response, Dar provided an update on the ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India, asserting Pakistan’s commitment to combating terrorism. He emphasized that Pakistan is resolute in its stance against terrorism and opposes actions that may lead to further escalation. He also mentioned that Pakistan is managing the situation with maturity and is in regular communication with China and the international community.
