The Centre has decided not to release the Good Governance Index (GGI) 2023, originally slated for launch during the upcoming Good Governance Week from December 19 to 25. According to sources cited by The Indian Express, the next edition is now scheduled for release in 2025.

The Good Governance Index, first launched in December 2019 on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, assesses states and Union Territories (UTs) across over 50 indicators, covering sectors like agriculture, economic governance, public health, and citizen-centric governance. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat led the rankings in 2019 and 2021, respectively.

While the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) had initially planned to release the 2023 index on December 23, officials later decided that using data collected earlier in 2023 for a release at the end of 2024 would render the findings outdated. The department is set to initiate fresh data collection for the next edition.

V Srinivas, Secretary, DARPG, confirmed the decision, stating, “The GGI is a biennial publication of an assessment of States/UTs, and the next edition will be published in December 2025. The GGI 2021 and 2019 have been released by DARPG. The DARPG has published District Good Governance Indices for Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Arunachal Pradesh, in the period 2021-2024.”

The last Good Governance Index, released on December 25, 2021, by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, evaluated states on 58 indicators across 10 sectors. Gujarat topped the rankings that year, with 20 states showing improved composite scores compared to the 2019 index.

The DARPG’s decision aligns with its commitment to ensuring that the data underpinning governance assessments remains current and relevant for policy formulation and implementation.
