GDP growth estimated at 6.3 per cent for 2023-24: FICCI Economic Outlook Survey
The Indian economy is projected to grow by 6.3 per cent in FY24 with a minimum and maximum growth estimate of 6.0 per cent and 6.6 per cent respectively, according to the latest Economic Outlook Survey released by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on Monday.

Supreme court verdict on same sex marriage tomorrow
The Supreme Court is set to announce its decision on the legal recognition of same-sex marriages in India [Supriyo and anr v. Union of India]. A Constitution Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, and including Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha, reserved the verdict on May 11 following a ten-day hearing. The case pertains to several petitions urging the legal acceptance of same-sex unions in the country.
SC issues notice to UP govt on Pawan Khera’s plea challenging Allahabad HC order
The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea by Congress leader Pawan Khera against an Allahabad High Court order refusing to quash criminal proceedings against him for allegedly making objectionable comments against the Prime Minister.
SC rejects plea of mother of two to terminate over 26-week pregnancy
The Supreme Court on Monday declined to permit a married woman, a mother of two, to terminate her over 26-week pregnancy as the foetus was healthy and the AIIMS medical board found no abnormality with it. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said the length of pregnancy has crossed 24 weeks, the upper limit for allowing Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), and therefore it cannot be permitted. Finnish Nobel peace laureate Ahtisaari dies at 86
Nobel peace laureate Martti Ahtisaari, who served as Finland’s 10th president between 1994 and 2000, died on Monday at the age of 86, the Finnish president’s office said in a statement. Ahtisaari was celebrated around the world for brokering peace in conflict zones in Kosovo, Indonesia and Northern Ireland. (Reuters)

Qatar to return three Ukrainian children from Russia
Three Ukrainian children who had been taken to Russia are to be released to Qatari diplomats in Moscow this week under a mechanism Qatar has set-up with the goal of returning many more children from Russia to Ukraine, a Qatari official briefed on the plans told Reuters on Monday. Qatar on Friday facilitated the return of another Ukrainian child, aged 7, who was reunited with his grandmother and is en route to Ukraine via Estonia, the official said. The other three children are a boy aged 2, a 9-year-old boy, and a girl aged 17. (Reuters)
Indonesia posts higher-than-expected Sept trade surplus
An unexpectedly large slump in imports led Indonesia to book a bigger-than-expected trade surplus in September despite exports remaining weak, data from the statistics bureau showed on Monday. Southeast Asia’s largest economy reported a $3.42 billion trade surplus last month, compared with a Reuters poll expecting a $2.13 billion surplus. The previous month, the resource-rich country had a $3.12 billion surplus. (Reuters)

Indian-American man killed in US road crash
A 42-year-old Indian-American man died in a brutal head-on collision in Indianapolis this week, the police said. The deceased, Sukhwinder Singh, died of injuries on October 13, at a hospital. The accident occurred in rural Greenwood near Indianapolis. Singh, who hailed from Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, arrived in the US at the age of 15 in 1996. (PTI)
Agniveer Amritpal Singh committed suicide, military honours not extended to his funeral as per rules: Army
The Army has said that Agniveer Amritpal Singh committed suicide by shooting himself while on sentry duty and that military honours were not extended to his funeral as deaths arising out of self-inflicted injuries are not given such honours. The Army, on Sunday, asserted that it does not differentiate among soldiers based on whether they joined the force prior to or after the implementation of the Agnipath scheme. (PTI)
