Mihir Shah, the 24-year-old prime suspect in the BMW hit-and-run case that claimed the life of Kaveri Nakhwa, was remanded in police custody until July 16 by a Mumbai court on Wednesday.

Shah was apprehended on Tuesday after evading capture for over 72 hours following the tragic incident in Mumbai’s Worli area. The collision, which occurred early Sunday morning, resulted in the death of Kaveri Nakhwa, 45, and left her husband, Pradeep Nakhwa, injured.

During the court hearing at Sewri court, Mumbai Police emphasised the severity of the crime, describing it as “cruel and heartless.” They requested an extended custody period to investigate Shah’s escape and to locate the missing number plate of the BMW involved in the incident.

According to police reports, Shah allegedly drove the BMW that struck the Nakhwas’ two-wheeler, dragging Kaveri Nakhwa for about 1.5 kilometers before halting briefly and then fleeing in another vehicle after switching seats with his driver, Rajrishi Bidawat.

Shah’s father, Rajesh Shah, a Shiv Sena politician from Palghar, has also been implicated in aiding his son’s escape and was recently removed from his position as the deputy leader of the party. Bidawat, who remained in police custody until July 11, was allegedly present in the BMW during the incident.

Pradeep Nakhwa, while speaking to reporters at Worli police station, expressed anguish over the loss of his wife and demanded stringent punishment for Mihir Shah. Recounting the tragic events, he described how the speeding BMW collided with their scooter from behind, resulting in Kaveri Nakhwa’s fatal injuries.

The case has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice from various quarters of society, with the court proceedings expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident and the subsequent actions of those involved.

As investigations continue, Mumbai Police are focusing on gathering evidence, including Shah’s mobile phone, to strengthen their case against him. The court’s decision to grant police custody reflects the seriousness with which authorities are approaching this tragic case of hit-and-run.
