The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is suddenly facing a unique problem in Kerala as its MP and Union Minister Suresh Gopi has expressed willingness to step down from the ministerial position. Reason – his income has gone down. While many would not believe how a Union Minister is troubled with his “less income”, Suresh Gopi has explained the same in detail.
Suresh Gopi is a filmstar and his entire argument is based on his career as an actor in the Malayalam cinema. He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the BJP and his victory was celebrated by the party as well.
However, a year later, Gopi seems it was not a wise decision. “I never wanted to be a minister by quitting my film career”, adding that his income has significantly decreased in recent times,” the Thrissur MP said on Sunday.
“I really want to continue acting. I need to earn more; my income has now stopped completely,” Gopi added, quoted reports.
How is Gopi’s film trajectory?
Suresh Gopi is known for his action-packed films which are over 250 in number. He has given some hits like Chinthamani Kolacase (2006), but films as Lanka, Rashtram, and Pathaaka (all 2006) have just gone flat at the box office. The trend did not die and Gopi had little success with films Twenty:20 (2008) and Varane Avashyamund (2020).
He joined the saffron party in 2016 and contested Lok Sabha polls in 2024 from Thrissur on the slogan “A Union Minister for Thrissur, Modi’s Guarantee”. Gopi had previously unsuccessfully fought elections both for Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha, a report in India Today said.
He won and was made the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Tourism on June 9, 2024. But he didn’t want this.
Gopi’s hidden desire
Hours after being made a minister and swearing an oath at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Gopi told reporters he just wanted to work as an MP and did not wish to be a minister.
“I want to work as an MP. My stand was that I didn’t want it (Cabinet berth). I had told (the party) that I was not interested in it (Cabinet berth). I think I will be relieved soon. The people of Thrissur know very well. I will perform very well as an MP,” he was quoted as saying.
“I desperately want to do films,” he had then added. The comment sparked a row after Congress called the statement a “mockery of voters”.
“Why don’t you tell your MP to first decide what he wants to do in life, and most importantly, stop this show in front of the media after taking an oath in the name of God and the Constitution,” the party had posted on X.
Gopi then took to Facebook and clarified, “A few media platforms are spreading the incorrect news that I am going to resign from the Council of Ministers of the Modi Government. This is grossly incorrect. Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, we are committed to the development and prosperity of Kerala“.
What happened in 2025?
Gopi continued as Union Minister and actor. But his latest release, Janaki V vs State of Kerala (2025), failed at the box office.
Now, expressing his wish to focus on acting again, he said, “I am saying here with sincerity that (Rajya Sabha MP) Sadanandan should be made a (Union) Minister after removing me”.
Now it is up to the BJP to decide his future, or wait till he takes any action.
