Tech tycoon-turned-philanthropist Bill Gates praised India’s progress in renewable resources, aggressive target for 50% renewable power use by 2030 and innovation in tackling challenges like climate change, improving agricultural produce during a conversation with Indian Express Group’s Executive Director Anant Goenka at the Express Adda in Mumbai on Thursday.
Gates acknowledged that while India is making significant strides in renewable energy, overall carbon emissions may still rise to meet developmental needs. He pointed out that China leads in renewable energy, but India is likely the second-largest player, benefiting from advancements in affordable solar panels and battery technology.
Discussing global energy demands, Gates noted that rising aspirations in the Global South and the growth of artificial intelligence are creating new challenges. He also highlighted the impact of US-China trade tensions on the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors, saying that restrictions on technology sharing have hindered progress.
India’s digital infrastructure phenomenal
Goenka asked whether India could take on a greater role in global development. Gates responded instantly and called the UPI his favourite innovation from India that can help the world. Speaking particularly about India’s progress in digital infrastructure he said, “The best example of India’s role in helping other countries is the digital public infrastructure. It’s a phenomenal thing, whether you look at banking or government benefits being transferred.”
He emphasized that this digital framework has provided a strong foundation for India’s startup ecosystem and economic growth.
Innovation the way forward
Gates also spoke about India’s rising influence in technological advancements. He expressed his optimism about India becoming a significant innovation hub. “In diagnostics, pioneering use of AI, advanced agriculture, bio-fertilisers, better seeds, animal vaccines, animal genetics, we see that India is going to be a significant source for innovation that helps all these problems domestically.”
He further expressed confidence in India’s pace of innovation, stating, “I am pleased that this concept of more and more innovation coming from India is no exaggeration; it’s growing faster than I even expected.”
With its advancements in clean energy, technology, and digital infrastructure, Gates believes India is well-positioned to shape the future of global innovation and sustainable development.
What Bill gates said on future of Brand India
Elaborating on the impact of Brand India globally, Gates added that “We meet great Indians all over the world and a lot of people don’t know much about India. They should come more and learn more. If India can stay on the path of 2047, that’s not just beneficial to India but to the whole world. In fact, you have 20 per cent of humanity that runs truly democratic elections and works out on all the priorities. There is more money for health, and education.”
