A man suspected of bike theft was brutally tortured by a mob in Bihar’s Araria. The incident reportedly involved the mob pulling down the man’s pants and pouring chili powder into his rectum.

After the video of the incident gained attention on social media, Mohammed Shifaat from Islamnagar was arrested on August 25, The Indian Express reported.

According to the Araria Police, Shifaat’s bike, which had been parked outside Sadar Hospital, was stolen on Sunday. Shifaat later discovered the stolen bike in the possession of a resident from Simraha.

In response, Shifaat and his associates allegedly subjected the suspected thief to a public punishment. The viral video shows the victim restrained with his hands tied while a man pours what appears to be chili powder into his rectum, and another person uses a pencil to forcefully insert the substance.

A press statement from the Araria police said the incident took place in Islamnagar, within the Araria police station area. It described how people cruelly tied up a young man and inserted a substance like chili into his private parts, accusing him of theft.

The police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Mohammed Shifaat and other suspects, who are being identified.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the major opposition party, has salmmed the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United)-BJP government over the incident.
