BJP’s Karnataka unit has announced a state-wide agitation demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, holding them directly responsible for the June 4 stampede. The incident took place during Royal Challengers Bengaluru‘s IPL title win and resulted in the death of 11 people.
Speaking to the reporters, state BJP President BY Vijayendra said the party would begin its protest with a large rally at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on June 13, which will be followed by a march to the CM’s residence. On June 16, the party will hold protests across all Assembly constituencies.
“About 15,000 to 20,000 party workers, people who are angry with the government and families of the deceased will take part in the protest,” he said.
Vijayendra accused the government of poor planning and negligence. He noted that the stampede was the result of an alleged competition between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, both trying to take credit for the RCB IPL victory celebrations.
“The competition between CM and Deputy CM led to two separate events. After the CM planned one at the Vidhana Soudha, Shivakumar used his influence to organise another at the stadium,” he said. “Shivakumar rushed to the airport as though he himself was a champion and welcomed them, we have seen the visuals,” he added.
‘State govt didn’t take DCP’s letter seriously’
Vijayendra also said that police had advised against allowing the Vidhana Soudha event, but the government ignored the warning. Citing the DCP’s (Vidhana Soudha Security) letter to the government, Vijayendra said, “Govt has not taken the letter seriously and permission was granted, as they were eager for publicity encashing from the RCB’s victory.”
He criticised Siddaramaiah’s claim that there was no issue at the Vidhana Soudha and said it was clear he was trying to shift blame to Shivakumar. “The CM seems to be indicating that the celebrations were led by Shivakumar, and he is responsible for the deaths,” he said.
Calling the incident more than just negligence, he said, “it is not only negligence of the state government. It’s a criminal offence.”
He also criticised the suspension of five senior police officers, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, saying it was done to protect the CM and Deputy CM. Police officers have been made ‘scapegoats’, he added.
Taking a jibe at Siddaramaiah, he added, “Our CM is so innocent, he didn’t know about the deaths. He was having dosa at a hotel.”
The BJP said it will continue its protest until both leaders step down.
