The railway police have launched an investigation into a stampede that occurred at Western Railway’s Bandra Terminus on Sunday, resulting in injuries to ten passengers, two of whom sustained serious injuries.

Incident Details

The incident unfolded around 2:45 AM as passengers rushed to board the Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express, which was entering platform number 1 ahead of its scheduled departure at 5:10 AM.

The terminus was heavily crowded, with thousands of travelers attempting to reach their hometowns, primarily in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, for the Diwali and Chhath festivals. Railway police Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Manoj Patil confirmed that their investigation into the stampede had commenced.

Despite the presence of police and the Railway Protection Force at the station, the overwhelming number of passengers proved challenging for crowd management. “Our probe into the incident has begun,” stated DCP Patil, highlighting the need to assess safety measures during peak travel times.

Among those seriously injured are 19-year-old Indrajit Shahani and 18-year-old Noor Mohammad Sheikh. Of the ten injured passengers, seven are currently hospitalized, while three have opted for discharge against medical advice (DAMA).
