Jagan Mohan Reddy departed from the Congress in 2010 after feeling marginalized by the party leadership following his father's demise in a helicopter crash in September 2009. Subsequently, he established his own party in 2011.
Contesting independently, Naidu suffered a significant defeat in 2019, securing only 23 Assembly seats, while the TDP's Lok Sabha seats decreased from 15 to three. The BJP's vote share declined from 4 percent in 2014 to less than 1 percent in 2019.
Naidu withdrew from the NDA ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This decision stemmed from his dissatisfaction with the BJP-led Union government's refusal to fulfill the promise of granting Special Category Status to the state following its bifurcation, despite initially offering a special package.
The JSP refrained from contesting but extended external support. Jagan Reddy made a strong debut, securing approximately 70 seats. In the Lok Sabha, the TDP-led alliance clinched 16 seats, while the YSR Congress secured nine seats.
In 2014, immediately following the state's bifurcation, the TDP formed an alliance with the BJP and JSP to compete against the YSR Congress, which was participating in its inaugural election. Naidu emerged triumphant, with the TDP securing 102 out of 175 Assembly seats, while the BJP claimed four seats.
The Kapu community, constituting approximately 20 to 22 percent of the electorate, and the other backward classes, comprising half of the voters, hold significant sway in determining election outcomes. Political parties are actively seeking the support of these groups, with JSP’s Pawan Kalyan positioning himself as the representative of the Kapus due to his community ties.
