According to the Election Commission of India, there were a total of 1,507,875 electors in this constituency in 2019.
As per the 2011 Census, the entire district of Amritsar had a population of 2,490,656, with 53.6 percent residing in urban areas.
In terms of demographics, Sikhs make up the majority in the district at 68.94 percent, followed by Hindus at 27.74 percent, Christians at 2.18 percent, and Muslims at 0.5 percent, among others.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Amritsar seat was secured by Congress candidate Gurjeet Singh Aujla, with BJP candidate Hardeep Singh Puri finishing second. In the 2014 General Elections, Congress candidate Captain Amarinder Singh won the Amritsar constituency, while BJP candidate Arun Jaitley was the runner-up.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Congress leader Gurjeet Singh Aujla clinched victory in Amritsar with 4,45,032 votes, surpassing BJP candidate Hardeep Singh Puri who secured 3,45,406 votes. The voting turnout for the 2019 election stood at 56.34%. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Congress’s Amarinder Singh emerged triumphant in Amritsar, defeating BJP stalwart Arun Jaitley by a significant margin of over one lakh votes.
